Document Control and Research Boundary
This publication investigates the monument conventionally identified here as Kamari 2, also described in nineteenth-century sources as Bourdj i Kemri and as the superior tope at Kamari. The central purpose is not to reproduce a prior institutional conclusion, but to test a later “broken front tooth” claim against the surviving excavation descriptions, modern archaeological reconstruction, numismatic evidence, and identifiable museum or custodial records. The project therefore separates the physical stupa, the central deposit, each recorded object, later institutional interpretations, and any present-day sacred object said to descend from the deposit.
The strongest independently inspected archaeological record identifies an earlier core stupa within a later enlarged monument. At the centre of the core was a small square cell made from six cut stones. The deposit comprised a decayed dark-red cloth, a shallow bronze basin, pulverized earth or probable ash, bark, resinous fragments, gemstones, a silver reliquary, a rough striated object, and a gold coin of Wima Kadphises. Re-examination of the published Figure 59 plate, together with the project-supplied reproduction in Custodians of the Buddha’s Sacred Relics, Vol. 1, pp. 217–219, shows an additional visible object for which no numeral is clearly printed in the reproduced plate. The Hswagata publication identifies that unnumbered object as the broken front-tooth relic. This visual identification is therefore retained as project-associated evidence rather than being dismissed on the ground that a printed '59.8' label is not visible.
The supplied project materials preserve an institutional identification of the unnumbered object visible in the Figure 59 assemblage as a “Broken Front Tooth Relic.” The project also supplies a visual comparison between that illustrated object and the specimen currently safeguarded by Sao Dhammasami. The comparison is relevant evidence of morphological correspondence and is retained in this monograph. It does not, by itself, prove why the nineteenth-century/modern plate omitted a visible numeral, establish a continuous object-level provenance from the 1833 deposit to Myanmar, or constitute independent dental, biological, or individual identification.
Abstract
Kamari 2 is one of the Buddhist stupas excavated south-east of Kabul during the pioneering but methodologically limited antiquarian investigations of 1833. The monument was opened by Johann Martin Honigberger and described in detail by Eugène Jacquet, while Charles Masson supplied drawings and parallel observations. Later scholarship by Gérard Fussman and Elizabeth Errington permits a much clearer reconstruction of the monument, its earlier core stupa, its central stone cell, and the relic deposit. The core deposit is chronologically important because it contained a gold coin of Wima Kadphises, providing a terminus post quem and strongly situating the foundation deposit in the early second century CE. The visible enlarged stupa and associated monastic remains are later. The deposit is also historiographically important because a modern Hswagata case tradition has associated it with a broken front tooth relic. Independent inspection of the principal archaeological reconstruction, however, shows that Errington's Figure 59 enumerates only items 59.1–59.7 and does not include a tooth. The archaeological list records bark, resinous material, gemstones, a cylindrical silver reliquary, the so-called Philosopher's Stone, and a Wima Kadphises gold coin within a larger bronze-basin assemblage. This monograph therefore reaches a bounded conclusion: Kamari 2 preserves a well-documented Buddhist relic-deposit context and an exceptionally useful early Kushan chronological anchor, but the specific broken-front-tooth identification remains unverified in the inspected excavation evidence. The later institutional tooth claim is preserved as a tradition-associated and archival claim requiring an object-level custody bridge and competent material identification. The study also re-examines excavation history, architecture, relic-deposit practice, numismatics, regional Buddhist geography, the dispersal of Honigberger's collection, present documentation gaps, and the ethical distinction between archaeological evidence, sacred attribution, museum custody, and biological identity.

Research Framework and Source Base
Chapter 1 — Introduction
1.1 Background and Rationale
Kamari 2 belongs to a dense Buddhist landscape south-east of Kabul in which stupas, monasteries, columns, and routes were distributed across the Shakh Baranta or Monaray Ghar zone. Nineteenth-century investigators encountered the monuments before modern archaeological recording standards existed. Their work was destructive and frequently motivated by the expectation of coins, reliquaries, and other portable finds, yet the surviving descriptions remain indispensable because the original deposit was irreversibly disturbed in 1833. The research problem is therefore one of reconstruction: a modern study must recover context from texts, drawings, object histories, and later site surveys while refusing to attribute modern precision to the old excavation.
Kamari is especially significant because Honigberger encountered an earlier core stupa inside a later enlargement. This nested architecture makes the monument an unusually clear example of how Buddhist sacred buildings could be renewed around an older ritual nucleus. The central cell belonged to the earlier structure, so the date of the deposit does not automatically date every visible architectural feature. This distinction is essential for avoiding a simple “second-century stupa” label that collapses several centuries of construction and cult use into one moment.
The project acquired a second importance through later Hswagata publications that identify a “Broken Front Tooth Relic” with Kamari. Because tooth relics carry strong devotional, historical, and institutional meaning, even a small error in object identity can travel widely once it enters a registry, exhibition label, certificate, or subsequent paper. HIRR-2026-0031 therefore treats the tooth claim as a high-priority verification problem and asks not whether such a relic could have existed, but whether the specific claim can be traced through the documented Kamari deposit and a defensible modern object history.
1.2 Problem Statement
The core problem is now more narrowly defined than in the earlier draft. The later case narrative speaks of a small broken front tooth linked to “Fig. 59.8.” Re-examination of the reproduced Figure 59 plate shows that the visible assemblage includes an object without a clearly printed numeral in addition to the numbered objects. The Hswagata publication identifies this unnumbered object as the broken front-tooth relic. Errington’s accompanying reconstruction and numbering must therefore be read together with the visual plate rather than treated as proof that no additional object is shown. The Wima Kadphises gold coin remains the strongest chronological anchor for the foundation deposit.
A second problem concerns excavator identity. The supplied project data named Sir John Marshall and the year 1913. The primary and near-primary record instead assigns the Kamari 2 excavation to Johann Martin Honigberger in 1833. Charles Masson is important as a recorder, draughtsman, and contemporary investigator of the wider Kabul and Darunta landscape, but he should not be substituted for Honigberger as the excavator of this particular deposit. Marshall belongs to a later phase of South Asian archaeology and is not the source of the Kamari 2 discovery described by Jacquet.
A third problem is custodial. The later case literature sometimes implies a straightforward path from the nineteenth-century deposit to British Museum documentation or to a modern tooth specimen. Honigberger’s own collection history was far more dispersed. Parts were offered or sold in Europe; one Wima Kadphises coin from Kamari was sold to Rollin and entered the Cabinet des Médailles, while other material was left with a Viennese banker whose bankruptcy contributed to loss and dispersal. A present-day object claim therefore requires positive linkage, not a general statement that Afghan antiquities later entered British collections.
1.3 Research Gap
Modern scholarship has greatly improved the archaeological reconstruction of Kamari, while the tooth question sits between archaeological publication and later institutional interpretation. The revised evidence picture is not that the plate lacks any tooth-like object: an unnumbered object is visibly present, and the Hswagata publication identifies it as the broken front-tooth relic. The remaining gap concerns the documentary basis for that identification, the reason for the missing visible numeral, and the object-level provenance connecting the illustrated deposit to the present safeguarded specimen.
There is also a visual-documentation gap. The most useful historical images are dispersed across Jacquet’s plates, Masson’s drawings, Fussman’s architectural corpus, and Errington’s modern reconstruction. Rights and access conditions differ. The present monograph therefore uses original analytical diagrams for public explanatory purposes and registers the historical images as sources rather than silently redrawing them as though they were direct copies.
Finally, there is a scientific gap. The Figure 59 plate and the project-supplied comparison can support a visual observation that the disputed object is tooth-like and that it shares visible morphological features with the present safeguarded specimen. Visual correspondence, however, cannot by itself establish species, dental anatomy, antiquity, individual identity, or attribution to the historical Buddha. No independently inspected laboratory report presently links a tested specimen to the Kamari 2 deposit. Scientific identification therefore remains an outstanding verification requirement.
1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Objectives

Evaluate the tooth claim against source wording and figure numbering.

1.6 Scope and Delimitations
The geographic focus is Kamari 2 and its immediate Kabul Valley context. Shewaki, Seh Topan, Guldara, Bimaran, Chahar Bagh, and other sites appear only when they clarify architecture, chronology, deposit practice, or source history. They are not merged into the Kamari case.
The temporal scope ranges from the early Kushan foundation horizon of the core stupa through later enlargement and cult activity, the 1833 excavation, nineteenth-century dispersal, twentieth- and twenty-first-century reassessment, and the 2025–2026 institutional tooth publications.
The study is documentary and archaeological. It does not perform destructive sampling, DNA analysis, radiocarbon dating, or dental examination. It does not determine legal ownership, state sovereignty, or religious orthodoxy.
1.7 Key Terms and Operational Definitions
1.8 Conceptual and Evidential Framework
The evidential framework uses a one-directional test: later claims must be traced backward to earlier evidence, not earlier gaps filled forward from later certainty. The chain is Site → Monument → Phase → Cell → Container → Contents → Object → Transfer → Repository → Present specimen → Scientific identification → Historical attribution. A break at any point does not erase earlier evidence, but it prevents the later claim from inheriting confidence automatically.
This framework is deliberately asymmetrical. Strong evidence that Kamari 2 contained a Buddhist relic deposit can coexist with weak evidence for a broken tooth. Strong evidence for a Wima Kadphises coin can support the date of the deposit without proving that a modern specimen came from it. The method protects genuine archaeological findings from being weakened by overclaiming and protects sacred traditions from being presented as though their meaning depended entirely on laboratory proof.
1.9 Significance of the Study
Kamari 2 is significant for the history of Buddhist architecture because it preserves a clear episode of enlargement around an earlier sacred core. It is significant for numismatics because a Wima Kadphises coin helps anchor the foundation deposit. It is significant for museum and archive studies because Honigberger’s collection history demonstrates how nineteenth-century excavation objects could be scattered across dealers, museums, and lost private channels. It is significant for HIRR because the case shows why a registry must preserve corrections rather than allow a compelling modern label to replace the original evidence.
1.10 Structure of the Monograph
The monograph moves from method to place, from monument to deposit, from deposit to chronology, and from chronology to later interpretation. The central tooth claim is not treated in isolation; it is evaluated only after the physical and documentary architecture of Kamari 2 has been reconstructed. Museum and custody analysis then tests whether a modern specimen can be linked to the historical find, before the final evidence assessment states what is established, probable, possible, and unverified.
Chapter 2 — Sources, Historiography, and Research Method
2.1 Source Hierarchy and Claim-Specific Authority
No single source is “best” for every question. Jacquet is central for the 1833 excavation description because his account derives from Honigberger and includes the relevant plates. Errington is stronger for reconstructing cross-links among manuscripts, drawings, collections, and later scholarship. Fussman is stronger for the surviving site, monument dimensions, and phased architectural interpretation. Later Hswagata records are primary evidence for the existence of a modern tooth tradition, but not for the contents of the 1833 chamber.
This claim-specific hierarchy prevents a common error in heritage research: treating the newest source as automatically authoritative about the oldest event. A 2026 registry statement can be direct evidence that an institution made a claim in 2026. It cannot, merely by being recent, replace a nineteenth-century excavation list. Conversely, a nineteenth-century antiquarian cannot supply a present museum location without later documentation.
2.2 Jacquet’s 1836 Account
Jacquet’s “Notice” is the principal early published narrative for Honigberger’s Afghan discoveries. For Kamari, the relevant pages describe the monument, the excavation route, the earlier core, the cut-stone cell, and the deposit. The publication is especially valuable because it preserves item-level details and plates at a time close to the excavation. Its limitations are equally important: Jacquet did not conduct the excavation, and the account depends on information supplied by Honigberger and contemporary networks.
Within the Kamari section, the deposit is described as a complex ritual assemblage rather than as a single casket. Later simplified summaries can therefore distort the find if they extract only the silver vessel. The basin, cloth, matrix, bark, resinous material, gemstones, the silver reliquary, the rough concretion, and the coin belong to the interpretive problem together.
2.3 Masson, Wilson, and the Kabul Stupa Archive
Masson’s role in the Kamari record is indirect but substantial. He drew monuments, recorded topographical relationships, excavated other Afghan stupas, and created the documentary corpus later edited in Ariana Antiqua. Wilson records the superior tope at Kamari, while Errington uses Masson’s F64 drawings to clarify the site and later reconstruction. This makes Masson a major witness to the landscape and monument, but not the excavator of the Kamari 2 deposit.
The distinction matters because nineteenth-century publications frequently braid together the work of Honigberger, Masson, Gerard, Mohan Lal, Court, Ventura, and later editors. Without careful attribution, a modern narrative can accidentally transfer one investigator’s find to another or attach the wrong collection history to a specific object.
2.4 Honigberger’s Memoir and Collection Dispersal
Honigberger’s memoir is less detailed about individual Afghan stupas than Jacquet’s publication, but it is important for the afterlife of the finds. He describes the sale and dispersal of parts of his collection and reports that material left with the Viennese banker Geymüller was affected by bankruptcy. He also records the sale of Wima Kadphises coins, including a coin from Kamari, to the dealer Rollin. This history sharply limits any assumption of an unbroken institutional chain.
Collection dispersal is not a side issue. The modern tooth claim depends on object identity across time. If the Kamari assemblage was divided, sold, lost, or inadequately inventoried, the burden of proof for matching a present object becomes higher. Similarity of shape or religious meaning is not a substitute for a transfer record.
2.5 Fussman’s Architectural Reassessment
Fussman’s 2008 corpus re-situated the Buddhist monuments of the Kabul region through field observation, old drawings, measured description, and topographic analysis. For Kamari he distinguished the excavated Kamari 2 from other monuments and proposed that the surviving enlarged structure belongs to a later architectural phase than the early core deposit. This is crucial for the chronological architecture of the present monograph.
The contribution of the 2008 reassessment is methodological as well as factual. It demonstrates that a visible monument is not necessarily the same building that received the earliest deposit. Later enlargement, rebuilding, and continuing cult use can preserve a sacred centre while changing the architectural envelope around it.
2.6 Errington’s 2017 Reconstruction
Errington’s British Museum research publication is the most useful modern synthesis for reconstructing the Masson-era Afghan stupa record. It integrates manuscripts, drawings, museum documentation, Jacquet’s publications, nineteenth-century correspondence, and later field studies. The Kamari entry explicitly gives the deposit sequence and makes the figure numbering transparent.
For the tooth question, the plate and the accompanying numbering must be distinguished. The accompanying reconstruction enumerates items through 59.7, but re-examination of the reproduced Figure 59 image shows an additional object without a clearly visible numeral. The Hswagata publication Custodians of the Buddha’s Sacred Relics, Vol. 1, pp. 217–219 identifies this unnumbered object as the broken front-tooth relic and associates it with the designation “Fig. 59.8.” The revised finding is therefore a figure-numbering and identification problem, not proof that the object is absent from the plate.
2.7 Later Hswagata Publications as Historiographic Sources
The 2025 and 2026 Hswagata publications are retained as part of the project’s evidential history. They show when and how the “broken front tooth” interpretation entered the institutional record, how it was framed in relation to a silver reliquary and Kushan chronology, and how confidence language was expressed. Their value is therefore not erased by the archaeological correction.
At the same time, later institutional records cannot function as independent corroboration when they derive from one another. Repetition across a case study, presentation, museum label, and certificate may represent one institutional source family rather than four independent discoveries. The monograph records this dependence explicitly.
2.8 Search Strategy and Negative Evidence
The research searched the tooth claim directly rather than assuming that a general “relic” search was enough. Searches tested tooth, front tooth, broken tooth, Fig. 59.8, Kamari 2, Honigberger, Jacquet, silver reliquary, Wima Kadphises, British Museum, and custody vocabulary. Negative evidence is expressed narrowly: no tooth reference was located in the inspected principal Kamari excavation reconstruction; this does not prove that no tooth tradition ever existed.
The same discipline applies to museum searches. Failure to locate a current accession for the Kamari silver reliquary is recorded as an unresolved repository gap. It is not converted into a claim that the object was destroyed. Nineteenth-century dispersal makes several outcomes possible, and the monograph keeps those possibilities separate.
2.9 Citation Method and Footnote Discipline
Chicago Notes and Bibliography is used throughout. A footnote supports the proposition at the point where it appears; it does not automatically support the rest of the paragraph. Repeated use of the same source is shortened after the first full citation. Figure and table captions identify whether a visual is a source reproduction, a modern photograph, or an author reconstruction.
The document also distinguishes source inspection from bibliographic awareness. Ball and Gardin, for example, are cited through the modern synthesis where the original publication was not independently inspected at the same level. The limitation is stated rather than hidden behind a complete-looking bibliography.
2.10 Methodological Limitations
The project did not conduct an autopsy of the Kamari site or any claimed tooth specimen. It did not inspect Honigberger’s original Persian account, which appears not to have been published, and it did not inspect every surviving archival letter in person. Some visual sources remain accessible only through later reproductions or copyrighted publications.
These limits shape the conclusion. The archaeological reconstruction is strong because multiple source layers converge on the central cell and its contents. The tooth attribution is weak because the required object-level bridge is absent from the inspected evidence. The difference is not a contradiction in the method; it is the intended result of claim-specific evidence grading.
PART II
Site, Monument, and Archaeological Context
Chapter 3 — Site Identification, Names, Geography, and Historical Setting
3.1 Names and Identity
The name “Kamari” is not sufficient by itself to identify one monument. Modern scholarship distinguishes at least two stupas in the Kamari area. Kamari 2 is the higher monument on the slope and is the one excavated by Honigberger. Nineteenth-century descriptions also use forms such as Bourdj i Kemri and “Tope Kamari.” This monograph keeps the standardized label Kamari 2 while preserving historical forms in citations and source tables.
3.2 Geographic Setting
Errington, following Ball and Gardin and Fussman, places Kamari 2 south-east of Kabul at approximately 34°27′N, 69°18′E. The monument stands within a landscape of ridges and valleys linking other Buddhist remains, including Shewaki and Seh Topan. Because the historical coordinates are rounded and the landscape contains several closely spaced monuments, the map in this publication is analytical rather than survey-grade.

3.3 The Kabul Buddhist Landscape
The Kabul basin and surrounding ridges supported a network of Buddhist establishments whose monuments cannot be understood in isolation. Architectural similarities in arcade systems, pilasters, spandrel ornaments, and monastic layouts show that Kamari participated in a regional visual language. At the same time, the deposit sequence and construction history of each stupa remain site-specific.
Regional comparison is most useful when it explains a feature rather than when it supplies missing evidence. Shewaki helps clarify the use of core stupas within later enlargements and the decorative vocabulary of the ridge. Guldara helps illuminate later monumental construction. Neither site can provide a tooth for Kamari or repair a missing custody link.
3.4 Shewaki and the Shakh Baranta Ridge
Shewaki is especially important as a comparator because Honigberger excavated Shewaki 1 and the surviving architecture has been repeatedly documented. A modern conservation report places the Shewaki stupa at approximately 34°26′N, 69°17′E. The comparison confirms the density of Buddhist remains south-east of Kabul and helps explain why early investigators could easily confuse or compress monument identities in later retellings.
3.5 Routes, Monasteries, and Sacred Topography
The monuments occupied routes connecting the Kabul basin with passes and valleys leading toward Jalalabad and wider Gandhāran networks. Their position on slopes, terraces, and visually prominent spurs created a landscape in which movement, visibility, pilgrimage, monastic residence, and donor display intersected. Kamari’s courtyard and monastic cells indicate that the stupa was part of an inhabited ritual complex rather than an isolated mound.
3.6 Historical Gandhāra and Kabul
“Gandhāra” is used here as a broad cultural-historical frame, not as a claim that ancient political borders were static or identical with modern states. Kabul was connected to north-western South Asia, Central Asia, and Iranian worlds through trade, imperial administration, artistic exchange, and Buddhist institutions. The material culture of relic deposits reflects this connectivity without allowing a single imported object to determine the identity of every participant.
3.7 Kushan Political Context
The Wima Kadphises coin is the most direct political-chronological anchor in the Kamari foundation deposit. Its presence means the deposit cannot predate the coin. It also places the ritual act within a period of expanding Kushan monetary circulation and Buddhist patronage. The coin does not prove that Wima personally commissioned the stupa or that the relic belonged to the Buddha.
3.8 Religious Patronage without Royal Overstatement
Relic worship could serve many social actors: rulers, local elites, merchants, monastics, and lay donors. Precious containers and coins may communicate value, devotion, and status, but they do not identify the donor unless an inscription or other direct record does so. Kamari has no inspected donor inscription tied to the central deposit. Political interpretation must therefore remain broader than royal attribution.
3.9 Site Security and Modern Heritage Conditions
Afghanistan’s Buddhist monuments have faced conflict, illicit digging, erosion, development pressure, and limited conservation capacity. For this reason, the present monograph avoids publishing precise security-sensitive storage information and uses only rounded historical site coordinates already available in scholarly sources. Heritage protection is treated as a modern responsibility separate from ancient ownership.
3.10 Geographic Conclusions
The geographic conclusion is therefore bounded: Kamari 2 is a distinct monument within the south-eastern Kabul Buddhist landscape, closely related in architectural vocabulary to neighbouring establishments but requiring its own deposit, chronology, and object history. Regional context strengthens interpretation only when the Kamari evidence itself remains visible.
Chapter 4 — Excavation History, Monument Description, and Construction Phases
4.1 Before Honigberger
European and local awareness of Afghan stupas predated the 1830s, but systematic archaeological method did not. Travellers described monuments through the categories available to them, sometimes identifying them as tombs, Hindu structures, or classical remains. The breakthrough of the 1830s was not modern excavation but the recognition that coins and relic deposits could establish Buddhist chronology.
4.2 Honigberger’s 1833 Excavation
Honigberger spent about five months in Afghanistan in 1833 and claimed to have opened many stupas. Kamari 2 was one of the seven deposits documented in enough detail to enter Jacquet’s published series. His technique at Kamari was a horizontal tunnel from the north into the base of the dome. This was destructive, selective, and oriented toward the centre, but it succeeded in identifying an earlier stupa encased by the larger monument.
4.3 The Core Stupa
The tunnel reached a smaller earlier stupa roughly five metres high, with a dome about 2.1 metres in diameter according to the modern reconstruction. The existence of this core is a major architectural fact because the central relic cell belongs to the earlier sacred nucleus rather than to the full visible enlargement.

4.4 The Central Cell
At the centre of the core was a cell about one foot, or 30.5 cm, square, formed from six rectangular cut stones. This precise construction indicates a deliberate reliquary installation. Its small scale also explains why the deposit must be reconstructed at the level of individual containers and contents rather than through general phrases such as “relic chamber treasure.”
4.5 The Later Enlargement
The large stupa recorded in the nineteenth century was not simply the original early second-century monument. Fussman dated the later visible structure and associated monastery approximately to the fourth or fifth century, while pottery suggests cult use could continue much later. The enlargement thus represents continuity of sacred location rather than a single construction event.
4.6 Architectural Decoration
The drum carried a blind arcade with ogee arches and Indo-Corinthian pilasters, with cone-like or bud-like forms in the spandrels. Two dowel holes in each arch are interpreted as attachment points for statues. Such details place Kamari within a regional architectural vocabulary shared with other Kabul-area monuments.
4.7 Courtyard and Monastic Cells
Honigberger also investigated part of the courtyard and encountered a row of small vaulted rooms. Later scholarship interpreted them as cells of roughly 2.7 m square, roofed with brick domes on squinches. The monastic setting expands the significance of the stupa from a single relic monument to an institution in which residence, ritual, teaching, and donor activity were connected.
4.8 Excavation Method as Evidence Limitation
Because the operation was a nineteenth-century tunnel excavation, there is no modern stratigraphic matrix, context numbering system, controlled sieving record, or contamination protocol. Modern reconstruction depends on the surviving narrative and drawings. This limitation does not erase the deposit but requires caution when inferring relationships not explicitly recorded.
4.9 Reconstruction versus Observation
The publication distinguishes three forms of statement: observations reported in the early account, later architectural reconstructions based on those observations, and modern analytical diagrams created for explanation. The diagrams in this monograph are not photographs of the excavation and must never be reproduced as such.
4.10 Chapter Finding
The architectural evidence supports a phased monument: an early core stupa with a deliberate central deposit, later encased in a larger stupa associated with a monastic complex. The Wima coin dates the foundation deposit; it does not date every surviving wall or later period of worship.
PART III
Relic Assemblage and Material Evidence
Chapter 5 — Deposit-by-Deposit Reconstruction of the Kamari 2 Assemblage
The Kamari deposit is best understood as a nested assemblage rather than as a single “tooth reliquary.” The early report and modern reconstruction preserve several layers of containment and association. The sequence begins with a cloth and bronze basin at chamber level, continues through a mixed matrix and associated small finds, and includes a silver reliquary with a separate rough concretion. The Wima coin belongs to the foundation deposit as a chronological anchor.
5.1 The Dark-Red Cloth
A very fine dark-red cloth covered the basin but disintegrated when exposed. Its loss illustrates the fragility of organic materials in early excavations. The record preserves colour and position but not fibre identification, weave analysis, or conservation sampling. It should therefore be called cloth or textile rather than silk unless the source specifically establishes silk.
5.2 The Bronze Basin
The principal outer receptacle was a shallow round bronze basin approximately 20.3 cm in diameter. It was heavily oxidized and its base had almost rusted away. The basin functioned as a container within the central cell, but it is materially and conceptually distinct from the smaller silver reliquary placed among its contents.
5.3 Pulverized Earth and Probable Ash
The basin contained a mixture described in the modern reconstruction as fine pulverized earth, probably mixed with ash. The word “probably” is important. No modern compositional analysis of the matrix is cited in the inspected record. It should not be transformed into “human cremation ash” or “charcoal” without additional evidence.
5.4 Bark Fragments
Fragments of tree bark were recorded among the deposit contents. In the wider Honigberger archive, bark and birch-bark materials sometimes carried writing, and Salomon has discussed related manuscript discoveries. For Kamari, however, the bark is not demonstrated to preserve legible writing. It remains an associated organic component rather than a proven manuscript.
5.5 White Resinous Material
Fragments of white resinous material were recovered. Similar descriptions appear in other Kabul-area relic deposits, and nineteenth-century observers sometimes interpreted pale fragments as bone. The Kamari record is valuable precisely because the modern reconstruction retains the resinous description rather than converting it to bodily remains.
5.6 Purplish-Blue Gem
A hemispherical purplish-blue gem, probably amethyst, was part of the assemblage. The cautious mineral identification reflects comparison rather than instrumental confirmation. Its presence is consistent with the use of gemstones as valued offerings in Gandhāran relic deposits.
5.7 Heart-Shaped Turquoise
A heart-shaped turquoise was also recorded. Similar heart-shaped turquoise inlays occur in other early Buddhist deposits and elite burial contexts. The comparison helps place the object within a broader material vocabulary but does not establish a direct workshop or donor connection.
5.8 Cylindrical Silver Reliquary
The most visually distinctive container in the Kamari assemblage was a cylindrical beaten-silver reliquary with a domed lid. Its form links it to a wider family of Gandhāran reliquaries. The record must not be conflated with British Museum object 1880.3496, which the museum identifies as a silver reliquary from Bimaran 4 rather than Kamari.
5.9 The “Philosopher’s Stone”
Inside the silver reliquary was a rough, striated, iron-coloured concretion later nicknamed the “Philosopher’s Stone.” The historical nickname has no scientific force. The object’s material composition and ritual meaning remain uncertain in the inspected sources. Its secure importance lies in its recorded position within the silver container.
5.10 The Wima Kadphises Gold Coin
A gold coin of Wima Kadphises accompanied the deposit and provides the strongest chronological anchor. Errington dates Wima Kadphises approximately to 113–127 CE and identifies the Kamari coin as the latest coin in the foundation deposit. The coin supplies a terminus post quem for the deposit but is not an inscription naming the stupa, donor, or relic.
Honigberger later reported selling a Wima Kadphises gold coin from Kamari to Rollin in Paris. This provides a useful post-excavation trace for at least one numismatic object, but it does not automatically establish the later custody of the silver reliquary or other deposit elements.
5.11 What Is Not in the Inspected Deposit List
The accompanying textual list does not explicitly name a tooth, dental fragment, incisor, canine, or molar, and a visible numeral '59.8' has not been established in the inspected reproduction. However, the Figure 59 plate visibly contains an additional unnumbered object, and the project-supplied Hswagata publication identifies that object as the broken front-tooth relic. The revised record must therefore preserve both facts: the textual identification is incomplete or unresolved, while the visual object is present and has a later institutional tooth identification.

Taken together, the carefully constructed cell, protective textile, metal basin, precious stones, silver reliquary, unusual enclosed object, and gold coin strongly support interpretation as an intentional Buddhist relic deposit. The archaeological strength of that interpretation does not depend on identifying the deposit as a tooth relic. The deposit can be both highly significant and biologically indeterminate.
5.13 Deposit Reconstruction Table
Chapter 6 — The Broken Front Tooth Claim: Source Criticism and Biological Limits
6.1 Origin of the Modern Claim
The broken-front-tooth interpretation appears in Hswagata institutional publications from 2025–2026. These publications describe a small fragment said to have been kept inside a silver reliquary from Kamari and sometimes relate it to a modern photograph. Within this monograph, these records are not discarded; they are treated as the earliest verified layer of the modern institutional claim unless an older source can be produced.
6.2 The “Fig. 59.8” Problem
Revision note on visual evidence. The supplied plate reproduction must be read as an image, not only through its printed numerals. It visibly includes an additional object for which no number is clearly printed. In Custodians of the Buddha’s Sacred Relics, Vol. 1, pp. 217–219, the project identifies this object as the broken front-tooth relic and compares it with the specimen now safeguarded by Sao Dhammasami. The comparison supports a project-level morphological correspondence claim. It does not establish that the missing numeral was intentionally omitted; the motive for the absence of a label remains unknown unless an archival or editorial source demonstrates it.
The specific reference to “Fig. 59.8” requires reconciliation with the plate rather than rejection. The inspected reproduction of Figure 59 contains numbered objects and an additional visible object for which no numeral is clearly printed. The project-supplied Custodians of the Buddha’s Sacred Relics, Vol. 1, pp. 217–219 identifies that unnumbered object as the broken front-tooth relic and treats it as Fig. 59.8. The evidential question is therefore why the object is visually present but not clearly numbered in the reproduced archaeological figure, and what documentary source originally supplied the tooth identification.

6.3 Excavator Correction
The supplied candidate data named Sir John Marshall in 1913. That attribution is inconsistent with the principal historical record. Kamari 2 was excavated by Honigberger in 1833, with Jacquet publishing the account in 1836 and Masson contributing drawings and regional documentation. Correct excavator identity is fundamental because provenance begins with the recovery event.
6.4 Tooth versus Tooth-Like
A tooth-like object is not yet a tooth. Visual shape can suggest crown, root, enamel-like surface, fracture, or wear, but competent dental or osteological analysis is required to identify dental tissue. Even a confirmed human tooth would still require a separate historical chain before attribution to the Buddha could be assessed.
6.5 Front Tooth Terminology
“Front tooth” ordinarily suggests an incisor or canine in non-technical speech, but the later case literature sometimes uses morphology broadly. A scientifically responsible record should name the anatomical category only when supported by specialist examination. Until then, “fragment described institutionally as a broken front tooth” is more accurate than “incisor of the Buddha.”
6.6 Photograph-Based Assessment
A photograph can document the appearance of a claimed specimen at a stated time. It cannot establish archaeological provenience, species, or individual identity. Image metadata, scale, lighting, view orientation, and custody history are needed even for a limited morphological assessment. The present project has not been supplied with a verified object photograph linked by a secure identifier to the 1833 deposit.
6.7 DNA and Radiocarbon Claims
The wider project narrative refers elsewhere to DNA and Carbon-14 information presented in connection with Hswagata relics. No laboratory report was supplied or independently inspected here that links such testing to a Kamari tooth specimen. The monograph therefore makes no DNA or radiocarbon claim for Kamari 2.
6.8 Religious Attribution
A Buddhist community may venerate a sacred object as a tooth relic through lineage, ritual recognition, teaching tradition, or custodial history. Such recognition is historically meaningful and should be recorded respectfully. It is not the same evidential category as an excavator’s object list or a laboratory result.
6.9 Historical Attribution to the Buddha
Attribution to the historical Buddha is the strongest form of the claim and requires more than a Buddhist context. The evidential chain would need secure identification of the object as dental material, a credible ancient relic-deposit context, and a documented connection from that deposit to the present specimen. Even then, direct biological identification of the historical individual would remain exceptionally difficult.
6.10 Current Disposition
The present HIRR disposition is therefore: archaeological relic deposit — strongly supported; additional unnumbered object in the Figure 59 plate — visually located; identification of that object as a broken front tooth — documented in the project-supplied Hswagata publication and supported at the level of institutional visual identification; original archaeological caption/numbering basis — requires further verification; object-level archaeological-to-modern custody bridge — unverified; biological identification — unverified; attribution to the Buddha — tradition-associated and not scientifically established.
PART IV
Chronology and Historical Interpretation
Chapter 7 — Numismatics, Chronology, and the Kushan Horizon
7.1 Why the Coin Matters
The Wima Kadphises gold coin is the most secure chronological indicator in the Kamari foundation deposit. It establishes that the deposit cannot be earlier than the coin. Because coins can circulate after minting, the coin does not provide an exact construction year, but its placement inside the core deposit makes it far more relevant than a surface or mixed-context coin.
7.2 Wima Kadphises and Dating Range
Errington uses a working reign range of approximately 113–127 CE for Wima Kadphises. The deposit is therefore best described as early second century CE or later within the coin’s chronological implications, rather than generically as “third century” or “Kushan–Sasanian.”
7.3 The Foundation Event versus the Visible Stupa
The early coin dates the foundation deposit of the core. The later enlarged monument is materially distinct and may belong several centuries later. Chronological statements in captions and summaries must specify which phase is being dated.
7.4 Later Kushan and Sasanian Signals
Kabul Valley Buddhist sites remained active through later Kushan and post-Kushan periods, but those broader regional histories cannot be imported into the central Kamari deposit unless the relevant objects belong to its context. The case should not be redated to a later period merely because later coins occur at neighbouring sites.
7.5 Coin as Offering and Chronological Object
A coin in a relic deposit can function simultaneously as a valued object, a marker of political economy, and a chronological indicator. These functions do not imply that the king issued the coin for the stupa or that the donor was a royal official.
7.6 Early Kushan Buddhist Patronage
The Kamari deposit participates in a broader pattern of early Buddhist relic deposits in which precious-metal containers, gems, organic wrappers, and coins were assembled in highly structured ritual contexts. This pattern supports cultural comparison while preserving site-specific differences.
7.7 Architectural Chronology
Fussman’s distinction between the early core and later visible monument is reinforced by architectural analysis. Decorative forms, enlargement history, and associated monastery remains point to substantial later work. The stupa is therefore a palimpsest of Buddhist investment rather than a one-date object.
7.8 Cult Continuity
Pottery and later survey evidence have been interpreted as suggesting cult activity into the early medieval period. Such continuity is historically important because it shows that an early relic nucleus could remain meaningful through later reconstruction and changing political circumstances.
7.9 Chronological Uncertainty
The exact date of each enlargement and repair remains less secure than the coin-bounded foundation deposit. Where scholarship proposes ranges rather than exact years, this monograph preserves those ranges. Precision is not created by converting a century-wide architectural estimate into a single date.
7.10 Chronological Finding
The best-supported sequence is: early second-century or later foundation deposit associated with Wima Kadphises; substantial later enlargement and monastic development, proposed around the fourth–fifth centuries; continuing cult use possibly into the ninth century; excavation in 1833; publication from 1836 onward; modern reinterpretation in the twenty-first century.

Chapter 8 — Historical, Textual, and Devotional Interpretation
8.1 Buddhist Relics and Stupas
Buddhist stupas operate at the intersection of material remains, memory, patronage, ritual, and place. A relic deposit can therefore be historically significant even when its contents cannot be biologically identified. The architectural decision to preserve and enlarge an earlier core at Kamari shows the persistence of sacred location across generations.
8.2 Śarīra and Material Ambiguity
Terms translated as relics or bodily relics can encompass different materials and levels of identification. A deposit need not contain an anatomically recognizable tooth to function as a sacred reliquary installation. The modern researcher must distinguish textual or ritual categories from laboratory categories.
8.3 Faxian and Regional Tooth Traditions
Early Chinese pilgrimage traditions describe multiple bodily relics in the broader north-western region, including a tooth. Such textual traditions demonstrate that tooth veneration formed part of the sacred geography known to pilgrims. They do not identify the Kamari central deposit or prove that a modern tooth came from it.
8.4 The Meaning of Concealment
The project narrative emphasizes concealment as protection and symbolic reverence. Archaeologically, placing relics within a sealed central cell is consistent with Buddhist enshrinement practice. The stronger claim that concealment specifically protected a “broken front tooth” is not supported unless the tooth itself is first established in the deposit.
8.5 Impermanence and Modern Interpretation
The association of a broken relic with anicca is a meaningful devotional interpretation. It belongs to Buddhist reflection rather than to the excavation report. The monograph preserves such interpretations in a dedicated devotional framework so that religious meaning is neither dismissed nor misrepresented as archaeological data.
8.6 Political Legitimacy and Patronage
Kushan rulers are strongly associated with the growth of Buddhist institutions, but the presence of a royal coin in a deposit does not directly establish a royal foundation. Political legitimacy may be explored as a contextual possibility, not stated as the intention of an unidentified donor.
8.7 Relic Networks and Mobility
The Kabul and Jalalabad stupa networks demonstrate the movement of artistic forms, coins, gems, ritual objects, and probably people. These networks provide a plausible environment for relic transmission. They do not, on their own, provide a chain of custody for any one present sacred object.
8.8 Living Devotion and Institutional Memory
The modern Hswagata broken-tooth tradition is part of the living history of interpretation. Its institutional publications, presentations, and registry language should be archived because future evidence may clarify or revise the claim. Preservation of the claim record is different from declaring the claim true.
8.9 Religious Humility
The limits of archaeological verification do not require a judgment on spiritual significance. A sacred object may remain meaningful to devotees even when its ancient provenance is unresolved. Conversely, devotion cannot be used to erase contradictory archaeological evidence. The monograph therefore maintains a two-domain respect: evidence is stated precisely, and belief is represented without ridicule.
8.10 Interpretive Finding
Kamari 2 offers a strong case for studying how ancient relic practice and modern relic interpretation intersect. The archaeological deposit is real and significant; the broken-front-tooth attribution is a later layer whose evidential status remains under review. The distinction allows historical scholarship and devotional heritage to coexist without one impersonating the other.
PART V
Museum, Provenance, Custody, and Modern Institutional History
Chapter 9 — From Excavation to Dispersal: Museum and Custody Reconstruction
9.1 Why Custody Must Be Object-Specific
Kamari’s deposit contained multiple objects. Their later histories may differ. A coin can be traced to one collection while a silver reliquary or organic material follows another path. “The Kamari relics” is therefore not a sufficient custody unit.
9.2 Honigberger’s European Dispersal
Honigberger attempted to sell and place finds in European collections. Errington and Honigberger’s memoir indicate that objects went through dealers and museums in Paris, Vienna, St Petersburg, and other private channels. The dispersal process weakens any claim of one continuous repository.
9.3 The Wima Coin Trace
One Wima Kadphises gold coin from Kamari was sold to Rollin and later acquired by the Cabinet des Médailles. This is a specific, object-level post-excavation link. It should not be generalized to every Kamari object.
9.4 The Silver Reliquary Problem
The modern record clearly knows that Honigberger found a silver reliquary at Kamari 2. The present project has not located a verified current accession that securely identifies the same reliquary. A British Museum silver reliquary sometimes encountered in searches, registration 1880.3496, is catalogued as a Bimaran 4 object and must not be reassigned to Kamari.
9.5 The “Philosopher’s Stone”
Honigberger’s unusual striated concretion was historically memorable and may have contributed to later attempts to track the deposit. Yet no inspected current object record has been established here that proves present custody. The object should be listed as historically recorded and presently unverified.
9.6 Organic Contents and Loss
Cloth, bark, resinous fragments, and loose matrix were especially vulnerable to destruction, separation, or undocumented disposal. Early antiquarian collecting often privileged coins, gems, and metal vessels over fragile contextual materials. The apparent absence of an organic item from later museums may therefore reflect collection history rather than original absence.
9.7 British Museum Records and Their Limits
The British Museum is central to the Masson and Afghan stupa archive, but not every Afghan object passed into its collections. Modern museum records can correct false associations by preserving excavator, findspot, and registration information. They also show why a visually similar silver reliquary cannot be reassigned from Bimaran to Kamari without evidence.
9.8 Kabul Museum Claim
The supplied project narrative states that the broken tooth relic is in Kabul Museum or storage. No inspected Kabul Museum catalogue or accession record was produced for this project that links a tooth to Kamari 2. The statement remains unverified and should not appear as present custody in a public certificate.
9.9 Hswagata Custody and Registry Claims
A modern institutional registry can document a present sacred object under its own custody or research scope, but the registry identifier does not retroactively create archaeological provenance. To claim Kamari origin, the institution must preserve the intermediate documentary bridge or state the association as tradition-based.
According to the current custodial account supplied for this project, the relic was kept in Sagaing, Myanmar, under the care of a lay Buddhist supporter from approximately 2016 until sometime before its transfer in 2022. In 2022, custodianship was transferred to Sao Dhammasami (Bhikkhu Indasoma Siridantamahāpālaka), who is reported to remain the present custodian.
This modern sequence is preserved because it forms part of the project’s present provenance record. It does not, however, close the earlier archaeological-to-modern gap. No independently inspected document presently links the object kept in Sagaing in 2016–2022 to a specific object removed from the Kamari 2 chamber in 1833. The 2016–2022 and 2022–present entries are therefore recorded as project-supplied custodial history pending independent documentary verification.
For analytical purposes, the monograph treats three different questions separately: who is reported to have cared for the present object in Myanmar; whether that modern object can be documented before 2016; and whether the same object can be traced back to the Kamari 2 archaeological deposit. Evidence for the first question has been supplied by the current project authority; the second and third questions remain provenance problems.
9.10 Custody Finding
The post-excavation history is therefore fragmentary. At least one Kamari 2 coin has a reported European collection path; other material was dispersed or lost; and a current accession for the Kamari silver reliquary has not been established in the inspected sources. The project-supplied modern custodial account records the reported tooth-like object in Sagaing with a lay Buddhist supporter from about 2016 until its transfer in 2022, followed by present custodianship by Sao Dhammasami. This modern sequence is retained as reported custody, but no object-level documentary bridge has yet connected it to the 1833 Kamari 2 cell. The historical-to-modern interval therefore remains a PROVENANCE GAP rather than an assumed continuity.

Evidence Assessment and HIRR Classification
Chapter 10 — Claim-by-Claim Evidence Assessment
The assessment below is designed to prevent one strong archaeological fact from carrying unrelated claims. Each proposition is tested independently. Confidence language is qualitative and evidence-based; no invented percentages are used.

10.1 Source Independence
Jacquet and Errington are not fully independent for the 1833 object list because Errington reconstructs the same historical excavation. Their value lies in different roles: Jacquet preserves the early account; Errington integrates manuscripts, museum documentation, and later fieldwork. Hswagata case studies are one later institutional source family and are not counted as multiple independent confirmations.
10.2 Contradictions
The project records several material contradictions: excavator and date, figure numbering, deposit contents, chronology, and present custody. These are not editorial imperfections to be harmonized. Each changes the meaning of the tooth claim and therefore remains visible in the public research record.
10.3 Negative Evidence
The absence of a tooth from the inspected Kamari list is significant because the list is detailed and itemized. Even so, the conclusion is carefully phrased as “no tooth reference located in the inspected principal deposit reconstruction.” The project does not claim to have proved that no undocumented tooth tradition or lost object ever existed.
10.4 Evidence Tier Justification
Kamari 2 merits inclusion in HIRR because it is a well-documented archaeological relic deposit with a strong numismatic anchor. The specific broken-tooth claim does not inherit that high archaeological tier. The project therefore distinguishes the site/deposit tier from the tooth-identification tier.
10.5 Duplicate Check
The Kamari 2 project is distinct from Shewaki, Seh Topan, Guldara, Bimaran, Manikyala, and other HIRR projects. Comparative references are labelled and do not transfer objects or conclusions. The prior internal case code STUPA-2026-003 is preserved as a legacy institutional identifier, not substituted for HIRR-2026-0031.
10.6 Reason for Inclusion in HIRR
The case tests one of the core HIRR problems: how a later tooth-relic tradition should be evaluated when the underlying archaeological deposit is genuine but the specific tooth is absent from the inspected excavation list. The case is therefore valuable both archaeologically and methodologically.
10.7 Outstanding Verification
The principal outstanding tasks are to identify the original source for the alleged “Fig. 59.8” tooth image; establish the provenance and present location of the claimed specimen; locate any object-level museum accession or custody record; obtain a specialist dental/material report if examination is ethically authorized; and reconcile all DOI and case-number variants across Hswagata publications.
10.8 Final Evidence Assessment
Kamari 2 is securely significant as an early Kushan-period relic deposit within a later expanded Buddhist complex. The broken-front-tooth interpretation remains a later institutional hypothesis or tradition-associated attribution. Publication should preserve both facts: the strength of the archaeological deposit and the present weakness of the object-level tooth bridge.
PART VII
Discussion, Conclusions, and Future Research
Chapter 11 — Discussion
11.1 Kamari as a Layered Sacred Monument
The most important interpretive insight is architectural continuity. Kamari’s early relic core was not abandoned when the monument grew. Later builders preserved the sacred centre within a larger envelope. This history explains how the same place could accumulate new architectural meaning without requiring the original deposit to be re-opened or redefined.
11.2 Relic Deposit without Tooth Certainty
The deposit’s religious importance does not depend on a tooth. The chamber was deliberate, precious materials were assembled, and the coin anchored the act historically. Recognizing that strength makes it unnecessary to overstate the biological identity of the contents.
11.3 How a Modern Claim Can Emerge
A modern tooth claim may emerge through archival misreading, figure-number drift, image association, oral tradition, object similarity, or a separate source that has not yet been recovered. The task of scholarship is not to assume which mechanism occurred, but to preserve the claim’s history while searching for the missing link.
11.4 The Cost of Figure-Number Errors
A false or unresolved figure reference can become a powerful pseudo-locator because it looks precise. Once repeated in papers, labels, and presentations, readers may assume that someone has inspected the original figure. HIRR-2026-0031 demonstrates why exact locator checking is a substantive research act rather than a formatting detail.
11.5 Museum Records as Corrective Evidence
Museum catalogues and collection research can prevent site contamination by preserving findspot and registration history. The identification of British Museum 1880.3496 as Bimaran 4, not Kamari, is a useful example of how object-level records can block a plausible but false association.
11.6 Scientific Testing and Sacred Material
If a claimed tooth specimen is available, any scientific examination must be ethically authorized, minimally invasive where possible, and carefully documented. A laboratory can answer material questions; it cannot by itself establish ancient personal identity without a provenance chain.
11.7 Faith and Archaeology
The distinction between devotion and archaeology should not be framed as a contest. Devotion can preserve objects and memories; archaeology can clarify context and chronology. Both are damaged when evidence categories are confused. The strongest public presentation is therefore one that names the sacred attribution and the archaeological limitation together.
11.8 Institutional Correction as Preservation
Correcting a prior record is not erasure. A well-governed registry preserves the superseded wording, the evidence that prompted revision, and the new bounded statement. This creates a more trustworthy historical record than silently deleting an earlier claim or defending it after contrary evidence appears.
Chapter 12 — Conclusions and Recommendations
12.1 Answer to Research Question 1
Kamari 2 is a distinct Buddhist stupa south-east of Kabul, historically called Bourdj i Kemri and related name forms, and should not be merged with nearby Shewaki or Seh Topan monuments.
12.2 Answer to Research Question 2
The relevant relic deposit was excavated by Johann Martin Honigberger in 1833. Jacquet published the principal detailed account in 1836; Masson provided drawings and regional documentation.
12.3 Answer to Research Question 3
The later monument enclosed an earlier core stupa. At the core’s centre was a small stone cell formed by six cut blocks.
12.4 Answer to Research Question 4
The central deposit included a dark-red cloth, oxidized bronze basin, pulverized earth/probable ash, bark, white resinous material, a purplish-blue gem, turquoise, a cylindrical silver reliquary, a rough striated concretion, and a gold coin of Wima Kadphises.
12.5 Answer to Research Question 5
The Figure 59 reconstruction clearly numbers items through 59.7, but the reproduced plate also contains an additional unnumbered object. The project-supplied Hswagata publication identifies that object as the broken front-tooth relic / “Fig. 59.8”; the original numbering and caption basis remain to be independently verified.
12.6 Answer to Research Question 6
The Wima Kadphises coin supports an early second-century CE or later date for the foundation deposit. It does not date the later visible enlargement, which scholarship places substantially later.
12.7 Answer to Research Question 7
The modern broken-front-tooth claim is documented as an institutional and devotional interpretation from 2025–2026, but an object-level archaeological-to-modern custody bridge has not been established in the inspected evidence.
12.8 What Is Established
A deliberate Buddhist relic deposit, early Kushan chronological anchor, phased stupa development, Honigberger’s excavation, and the detailed item sequence are established to a strong documentary standard.
12.9 What Is Probable
The deposit matrix probably included ash; the purplish-blue gem was probably amethyst; later architectural phases belong to a long history of rebuilding and cult continuity.
12.10 What Is Possible
A separate tooth tradition or lost object may have become associated with Kamari, but this possibility cannot be used as a substitute for documentary linkage.
12.11 What Remains Unverified
The specific broken tooth in the 1833 deposit, the Hswagata-identified unnumbered Figure 59 object / alleged Fig. 59.8, competent dental identification, present museum custody of the claimed specimen, and attribution to the historical Buddha remain unverified.
12.12 Final HIRR Assessment
HIRR-2026-0031 should be retained as an archaeological relic-deposit research project with a documented but unresolved broken-tooth attribution. Any future certificate wording should be narrower than the monograph and should not state that the 1833 excavation verified a Buddha tooth unless new primary evidence is produced.
12.13 Recommended Further Research
Priority should be given to obtaining the original image or source underlying the “Fig. 59.8” claim; examining Honigberger correspondence and sale records; tracing the Kamari silver reliquary; checking Cabinet des Médailles documentation for the Wima coin; auditing all Hswagata case versions and DOIs; and arranging specialist, ethically governed examination of any claimed tooth specimen only after its documentary identity is fixed.

Each dossier addresses a problem that cannot be resolved by a short registry entry: reconstruction of the nineteenth-century excavation, differentiation of architectural phases, item-by-item analysis of the central deposit, the chronological force of the coin evidence, the history of the later tooth claim, the dispersal of the recovered material, and the evidential limits created by missing object-level links. The dossiers retain the distinction between direct archaeological record, later interpretation, devotional attribution, and present institutional claim.
Appendix L — Archival Reconstruction of the 1833 Kamari 2 Excavation
This dossier reconstructs what can responsibly be said about the 1833 operation without projecting modern archaeological technique backward onto Honigberger’s work.
A.1 Honigberger as excavator and Jacquet as early publisher
The most basic correction concerns agency. The excavation relevant to the Kamari 2 central deposit belongs to Johann Martin Honigberger’s work in 1833. Jacquet’s 1836 article is important because it provides a detailed early publication of Honigberger’s discoveries and associated illustrations. This relationship must not be rewritten as an excavation by Sir John Marshall in 1913. Marshall belongs to another generation of South Asian archaeology, and importing his name into the Kamari record would change both the historical circumstances of discovery and the character of the surviving documentation. The distinction is therefore not merely biographical; it determines which notebooks, plates, collections, and nineteenth-century correspondence can legitimately be searched for the deposit.
The early documentation also reflects the methods and vocabulary of its time. Honigberger’s work preceded modern single-context recording, controlled sampling, conservation protocols, and archaeological stratigraphic matrices. The surviving narrative is nonetheless capable of preserving useful relationships: entry through the monument, discovery of an earlier internal stupa, location of a central stone cell, and the association of a group of objects within that cell. Modern analysis can reconstruct those relationships, but it must not describe them as though they had been documented using twentieth- or twenty-first-century field standards.
Jacquet’s role illustrates why “primary source” is not a single category. He was not the person physically cutting through the stupa, yet his publication is close in time to the excavation and is grounded in Honigberger’s discoveries. It is consequently near-primary for the excavation and primary for the published form in which European scholars first encountered much of the evidence. A later synthesis such as Errington’s can be stronger for source reconciliation because it compares dispersed archival traces, but it remains later analysis. The monograph therefore uses each source according to the claim it can best support rather than ranking all questions by one fixed hierarchy.
A.2 The excavation route and the evidential consequences of tunnelling
Honigberger reached the centre by a horizontal tunnel from the northern side of the monument. That fact matters because tunnelling through an existing stupa produces a very different archaeological record from controlled excavation of successive horizontal layers. A tunnel can reveal architectural relationships along its path, but it may leave large portions of the construction sequence unseen. It can also make it difficult to determine whether loose material entered the passage during excavation or belonged to an earlier event. Consequently, the strongest Kamari conclusions are those tied to deliberately constructed features and explicitly described contents, not assumptions about every soil or rubble layer encountered on the way to the centre.
The account describes an earlier stupa enclosed within a larger later monument. This is one of the most consequential observations in the case because it changes the meaning of “Kamari Stupa” from a single undifferentiated building into a sequence of Buddhist construction. The central deposit belongs to the earlier core, whereas architectural embellishment and the visible monument may belong to a later period. A chronology derived from the foundation coin therefore cannot automatically date every exposed architectural surface. The coin dates a depositional event associated with the earlier core; the later enlargement requires separate architectural and comparative arguments.
The tunnel excavation also places limits on statements about sealing. The central cut-stone cell appears to have been a deliberate closed chamber, and the described arrangement strongly supports intentional deposition. Yet modern terms such as “intact,” “undisturbed,” or “hermetically sealed” should be used only if the sources demonstrate the relevant condition. A chamber can be deliberate and ancient without allowing a modern researcher to reconstruct every post-depositional process. The language used in this monograph therefore emphasizes documented enclosure and association rather than overstating preservation conditions.
A.3 Why the 1833 recovery context remains valuable
Nineteenth-century excavation methods create limitations, but they do not erase the historical value of the record. The chamber’s dimensions, the six cut stones, the bronze basin, the wrapping cloth, the silver container, the Wima Kadphises coin, and the associated small objects form a coherent descriptive cluster repeated and re-examined in later scholarship. This provides an unusually useful base for reconstructing a Kushan-period relic or commemorative deposit in the Kabul region. The appropriate response is therefore neither romantic acceptance nor blanket dismissal of the old excavation, but claim-specific criticism.
The strongest reconstruction comes from convergence between the early narrative and later source-critical work. Errington’s treatment is particularly useful because it seeks to reconnect Honigberger, Jacquet, Masson, drawings, coins, and dispersed collections. Where the later synthesis can identify which illustrated object belongs to which early description, confidence in the object sequence rises. Where the modern location of an object remains unknown, that absence must remain visible. The method thus distinguishes reconstruction of the ancient deposit from reconstruction of the modern collection history.
Appendix M — Architectural Phase and Chamber Dossier
The Kamari case becomes clearer when the earlier core, the central stone cell, and the later enlargement are analysed as separate archaeological entities.
B.1 Earlier core and later enlargement
The architectural evidence makes the inner core the starting point for interpretation. The earlier stupa, reported inside the later mass, indicates that the monument underwent enlargement rather than being built once in its final form. Buddhist stupas were frequently renewed, enlarged, and re-endowed, and the Kamari evidence fits that broader possibility without requiring every enlargement to represent the same patron, date, or ritual purpose. The earlier core therefore receives its own analytical identity in the present reconstruction.
A foundation deposit and a later architectural skin answer different chronological questions. The Wima Kadphises coin provides a useful lower chronological boundary for the enshrinement event with which it was deposited. The masonry enclosing that earlier core may be centuries later. This separation prevents a common error in which an attractive coin date becomes the date of the whole surviving monument. It also allows later Buddhist activity to be taken seriously rather than treated as contamination of an otherwise “pure” Kushan monument.
The reported size of the earlier stupa—about five metres high, with a dome around 2.1 metres in diameter in the surviving description—should be treated as an historical measurement rather than a modern survey. The figures are still useful for scale and for reconstructing the relationship between the inner monument and the later enlargement. They should not be converted into millimetre-level architectural precision or used as the basis for engineering calculations.
B.2 Central stone cell as a constructed ritual feature
The central chamber is described as a square cell of approximately 30.5 centimetres, formed by six rectangular cut stones. A six-stone construction is consistent with a box-like space made from a base, four sides, and a cover. This reconstruction is analytically useful, but the precise assembly sequence should be stated only where the published description or plate allows it. What matters most is that the deposit occupied a purpose-made stone feature at the centre of the earlier stupa.
Centrality is archaeologically meaningful because it supports intentional ritual placement. The chamber was not described as an accidental void in rubble, and the associated vessel group was not a casual scatter. Even so, “relic chamber” remains an interpretation grounded in location, containers, associated substances, and Buddhist monument context. The term does not identify a particular biological individual. It establishes the function of the deposit at the level of Buddhist commemorative or relic practice.
The distinction between chamber and contents is maintained throughout the record. The stone cell is an architectural feature. The bronze basin is a container. The silver reliquary is another container within the associated assemblage. Bark, resinous matter, gemstones, a rough concretion, pulverized earth or ash, and the coin are contents or associated offerings. None of these categories should be collapsed into the generic word “relic” when an exact description is available.
B.3 Reading enlargement as historical continuity rather than a single event
The later enlargement may represent continuing veneration, changing architectural fashion, renewed patronage, or a combination of these processes. Archaeology cannot choose among these motives without evidence, but the physical fact of enlargement does show that the earlier core remained significant enough to preserve and envelop rather than simply demolish. The later structure can thus be discussed as evidence for the changing biography of the sacred place.
This architectural biography is also relevant to the later tooth narrative. A monument with several phases can acquire new memories and ritual associations across centuries. A modern tradition need not be archaeologically ancient merely because it attaches to an ancient monument. Conversely, the absence of a tooth in the excavated object list does not prevent later communities from developing devotional interpretations. The historical task is to date and classify each layer of meaning instead of forcing them into one continuous claim.
Appendix N — Figure 59 Item-by-Item Material Dossier
This dossier examines each item in the reconstructed Kamari 2 central deposit and identifies what the evidence permits and what remains outside the inspected record.
C.1 Fine dark-red cloth and organic wrapping
The reported fine dark-red cloth is significant because it indicates deliberate preparation of the deposit rather than a collection of loose objects dropped into a cavity. Textile in a reliquary context can function as wrapping, lining, separation, or ceremonial furnishing. The early record does not permit a confident fibre identification, dye analysis, or exact ritual interpretation. The correct public wording is therefore descriptive: a fine dark-red cloth was reported in association with the deposit.
Textile is also a conservation-sensitive category. If any fragment survives in a museum or private collection, modern analysis could potentially address fibre, dye, mineralization, or contamination, but no such examination should be invented from the nineteenth-century description. The mere colour word “red” does not establish cinnabar, madder, lac, or any other dye. This is a useful example of how a visually evocative early description must remain separate from modern material science.
C.2 Bronze basin and pulverized matrix
The shallow round bronze basin, reported at roughly 20.3 centimetres in diameter, is one of the largest objects in the central assemblage. Its role as a containing vessel is archaeologically more important than its decorative appearance. The basin held a fine pulverized material described in the later reconstruction as earth or probable ash together with the smaller objects. That wording should not be modernized into “cremated human remains” without biological analysis.
The term “ash” is especially vulnerable to overinterpretation in relic studies. Ash can contain mineral residue from combustion, soil, charcoal, powdered plaster, organic matter, or mixtures produced by ancient ritual and later decay. A nineteenth-century observer could recognize a powdery residue without having the analytical means to determine its composition. The present study therefore records probable ash as a source interpretation, not a laboratory result.
C.3 Bark fragments
Bark fragments are among the Figure 59 items and have attracted later attention because bark was used as a writing material in Gandhāra. Richard Salomon noted Honigberger’s discovery of bark pieces in a bronze bowl at “Bourdj i Kemri,” connecting the find to the broader history of Gandhāran manuscript materials. The possibility that bark once carried writing is historically interesting, but no inspected surviving text or legible inscription has been demonstrated for the Kamari fragments.
For that reason, this monograph uses “bark fragments” rather than “manuscript fragments.” The difference is evidentially important. A bark fragment can be an offering, packing material, botanical material, or degraded manuscript support. Only visible writing, a reliable early transcription, or another direct witness could justify the stronger manuscript label. The negative result is therefore specific: no writing on the Kamari bark has been established from the inspected evidence.
C.4 White resinous fragments
The white resinous pieces are another material category that should remain close to the source wording. “Resinous” is an observational description, not a chemical identification. In ritual deposits, aromatic resins and gums are plausible offerings, but plausibility is not composition. Without instrumental analysis or a specialist historical record, it would be unsafe to name frankincense, myrrh, camphor, or another substance.
Their inclusion nonetheless matters. Together with cloth, gems, metal vessels, and the coin, the resinous material shows a deposit combining materials of different sensory and symbolic qualities. The assemblage is not simply biological residue. It is a constructed ritual group in which containers, offerings, valuable objects, and substances interacted. This broader context is essential when evaluating later attempts to isolate one imagined tooth as the sole meaning of the chamber.
C.5 Purplish-blue hemispherical gem
Figure 59 includes a small purplish-blue hemispherical gem, described by Errington as probably amethyst. The word “probably” must remain visible because colour and appearance alone do not establish mineral species with certainty. The object’s hemispherical form may indicate a bead, cabochon, or setting element, but the early documentation does not authorize a reconstructed jewellery function.
Gemstones in reliquary deposits are widely interpretable as offerings, markers of value, or ritual embellishments. At Kamari the safest conclusion is narrower: a coloured stone was intentionally included among the chamber contents. Its presence contributes to the characterization of the deposit as curated and valuable, while its exact mineralogy and prior use remain open questions.
C.6 Heart-shaped turquoise
The heart-shaped turquoise is distinctive enough to be separately identified in the published reconstruction. Shape should not be turned into symbolism without evidence: a modern reader may see a heart as a devotional emblem, but the object’s ancient form need not carry the modern European symbolism of a heart. The appropriate description is morphological and material, preserving the early attribution while avoiding invented iconography.
If the object survives, non-invasive spectroscopy could test the turquoise identification and surface alteration. Such work would be scientifically useful but is not documented in the current source set. The research recommendation is therefore prospective rather than retrospective: identify the present object, establish custody, and only then consider appropriate non-destructive analysis under repository authority.
C.7 Cylindrical beaten silver reliquary with domed lid
The silver reliquary is central to the interpretation of the chamber because it is a purpose-built container nested within a broader offering assemblage. Its cylindrical body and domed lid distinguish it from the larger basin and support a more specialized function. Yet the exact substance of the silver should not be treated as a modern assay result; “silver” is the historical material identification unless a compositional analysis is located.
The reliquary contained the rough striated concretion called in the old literature a “Philosopher’s Stone.” That phrase is a historical label and should not be read as a scientific mineral category or evidence of alchemy. The object is best recorded by its physical description and the terminology used by the source. The fact that the container held this object rather than a listed tooth is one of the strongest direct reasons for rejecting the claim that Figure 59 illustrates a broken front tooth.
C.8 Rough striated concretion / “Philosopher’s Stone”
The rough striated object labelled Figure 59.6 must be kept distinct from the separate unnumbered object visible above/adjacent to it in the reproduced assemblage. Earlier drafting risked treating the striated object as the only disputed form. The revised analysis recognizes that the plate contains a separate unnumbered object which the Hswagata publication identifies as the broken front-tooth relic.
No inspected source requires the striated Figure 59.6 object itself to be identified as the tooth. The revised plate reading separates Figure 59.6 from the additional unnumbered object identified by the Hswagata publication as the broken front-tooth relic. Even for that unnumbered object, however, competent dental examination and an object-level provenance chain remain necessary before anatomical or individual attribution can be treated as independently verified.
C.9 Wima Kadphises gold coin
The Wima Kadphises gold coin has a different evidential role from the other chamber contents. It is both an offering and a chronological object. Because the coin cannot have been deposited before it was struck, its issue horizon supplies a terminus post quem for the enshrinement event. Errington’s chronological discussion places the relevant horizon in the early second century CE, often expressed around c. 113–127 CE for the foundation context.
A coin does not provide an exact construction date. It may have circulated before deposition, may have been curated, or may have been selected for symbolic reasons. The appropriate chronological statement is therefore that the deposit is no earlier than the coin’s issue and is consistent with an early Kushan foundation horizon. This avoids turning a numismatic boundary into an exact architectural year.
C.10 Absence of a tooth in the enumerated sequence
The object sequence has a direct consequence for the present project: the accompanying scholarly reconstruction numbers objects through 59.7, yet the reproduced plate visibly includes an additional object without a clearly printed numeral. The Hswagata publication identifies this object as the broken front-tooth relic and associates it with Fig. 59.8. Accordingly, the claim is reclassified from 'not located' to 'VISUALLY PRESENT / INSTITUTIONALLY IDENTIFIED; ORIGINAL NUMBERING AND PRIMARY CAPTION BASIS REQUIRES FURTHER VERIFICATION.'
Negative evidence must still be worded carefully. It is no longer correct to say that the claimed object was not located: the plate contains an unnumbered object which the Hswagata publication identifies as the broken front-tooth relic. The unresolved points are the original archaeological label or caption for that object, the reason no numeral is clearly visible in the reproduced plate, and the provenance bridge to the present specimen. The possibility that the missing label was deliberate is a project interpretation and cannot presently be stated as an established historical motive.
Appendix O — Numismatic and Chronological Dossier
This dossier isolates the chronological contribution of the Wima Kadphises coin and prevents later architectural or devotional dates from being projected backward onto the foundation deposit.
D.1 Wima Kadphises as a terminus post quem
Chronology begins with the object actually associated with the chamber. The Wima Kadphises gold coin gives a lower chronological boundary for the deposit. The coin cannot make the deposit earlier than its own production. It does not, however, prove that deposition occurred immediately after minting. This distinction is basic numismatic method and is especially important where a valuable gold coin could have been retained for a period before ritual deposition.
The early second-century horizon is materially different from the broad “third-century Kushan–Sasanian” language sometimes attached to the later tooth claim. The latter compresses separate historical periods and would move the foundation deposit away from the evidence supplied by the associated coin. The monograph therefore treats the early Kushan date as the strongest current position for the foundation event while reserving later dates for later architectural phases or continuing use.
D.2 Later visible monument and fourth–fifth century proposals
Fussman’s reassessment of Buddhist monuments around Kabul allows the visible Kamari structure to be considered within a later architectural horizon. The important methodological point is that the later stupa can be later than the relic deposit it encloses. This is exactly what a history of enlargement would predict. The surviving architecture therefore represents the monument’s biography rather than the date of a single founding moment.
When later architectural dating is based on comparative form, masonry, decorative features, or regional sequence, it should be expressed as a range and as an interpretation. Architectural comparison can be powerful, but it is not equivalent to a securely dated inscription embedded in a sealed phase. The text consequently separates “foundation deposit chronology” from “visible monument chronology.”
D.3 Long use of the Kabul Buddhist landscape
The possibility that Buddhist activity in the wider area continued into the early medieval period does not transform the original chamber into an early medieval deposit. Continued cult, repair, or occupation can coexist with an older sacred core. Recognizing this layered history is preferable to assigning every object and structure to a single dynasty.
This long chronology also creates a warning for relic transmission narratives. A sacred object could be moved, copied, replaced, reinterpreted, or newly associated during centuries of veneration. Without a documented object chain, the age of a site cannot automatically become the age of a present-day relic attributed to that site. Ancient monument chronology and modern object provenance are separate evidential questions.
D.4 Chronological claims that remain unresolved
Several chronological questions remain open. The exact date of the later enlargement is not fixed by the foundation coin. The date at which the monument ceased to function cannot be reduced to one year. The chronology of the dispersal of excavated objects is better documented for some coins than for organic or small finds. The date of origin of the modern “broken tooth” object, if it is a distinct physical specimen, has not been established by the inspected archaeological sources.
These unresolved points are not defects to be hidden. They define a research programme: locate the object, document its pre-Hswagata custody, examine any old photographs or labels, identify scientific records if they exist, and compare those records with the nineteenth-century source. Until those links are found, chronology for the modern object remains independent from chronology of the Kamari 2 chamber.
Appendix P — Tooth-Relic Claim and Biological-Identification Dossier
This dossier explains why the later “broken front tooth” tradition is preserved as a research subject while remaining distinct from what the excavated Kamari 2 assemblage presently demonstrates.
E.1 What a tooth claim would require
A scientifically responsible tooth claim contains several separate propositions. First, a defined object must be shown to be the same object recovered from a defined archaeological context. Second, competent anatomical or dental examination must identify it as dental material. Third, species must be addressed if human origin is claimed. Fourth, a provenance chain must connect the archaeological object to the present specimen. Finally, attribution to the historical Buddha would require historical evidence beyond morphology. None of these steps can be replaced by devotional importance or visual resemblance alone.
The present source set securely supports a Buddhist deposit and a silver reliquary, and the reproduced plate also shows an additional unnumbered object later identified institutionally as the broken front-tooth relic. This strengthens the visual basis of the project claim compared with the earlier draft. The evidential chain nevertheless remains incomplete because the original caption/numbering basis and the archaeological-to-modern provenance bridge have not yet been independently demonstrated. The appropriate status is therefore 'VISUALLY CORRELATED / INSTITUTIONALLY IDENTIFIED; PROVENANCE AND SCIENTIFIC VERIFICATION PENDING.'
E.2 Limits of photograph-based morphology
A photograph can document visible form, surface colour, fractures, apparent cavities, mineral accretions, and scale when a reliable scale is present. It cannot by itself establish internal enamel-dentine structure, species, ancient age, or provenance. Perspective, lighting, coatings, damage, and low resolution can make bone, stone, resin, or manufactured material appear dental. For that reason, the phrase “molar-like” or “tooth-like” is observational and should not be promoted to anatomical identification.
The user-supplied case study records a dark cavity-like void and patchy mineral accretion. Those observations may guide future examination, but the inference of dental caries or modern filling requires clinical or material evidence. A cavity-like visual feature could have several causes. The manuscript therefore preserves the observation while classifying the diagnostic interpretation as unverified.
E.3 DNA and radiocarbon statements
The supplied institutional narrative states that DNA and Carbon-14 information was sent to Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in February 2023. No underlying laboratory report, sample identifier, chain-of-custody record, laboratory name, method, calibration output, or result sheet has been inspected for this project. Consequently, the existence and meaning of any such scientific result cannot be established from the present evidence set.
Even a genuine DNA or radiocarbon report would answer limited questions. Radiocarbon could estimate the age of sampled biological carbon, not identify the historical Buddha. DNA could address biological relationships or species if preservation and contamination permit, but it would require an authenticated sample chain. Scientific testing strengthens a claim only when the tested sample is securely linked to the object under discussion. The document therefore lists the original reports as outstanding verification targets.
E.4 “Buddha relic” as historical attribution
Buddhist relic terminology often operates at a different level from laboratory identification. Communities may recognize a relic through transmission, ritual history, institutional custody, inscription, or sacred tradition. Scholarship should record such recognition respectfully, because it is part of the object’s history. It should not translate that recognition into a biological conclusion without a separate evidential basis.
The same principle applies to the phrase “broken front tooth of the Buddha.” The revised manuscript recognizes that the Hswagata identification is tied to a visibly present but unnumbered object in the Figure 59 plate and to a project-supplied morphological comparison with the present safeguarded specimen. This gives the claim a concrete visual basis. Attribution to the historical Buddha, however, remains a separate historical and scientific question and is not established by visual correspondence alone.
E.5 What could change the assessment
The assessment is deliberately revisable. A contemporaneous excavation drawing showing an additional tooth, a museum catalogue linking a dental fragment to Honigberger’s Kamari deposit, an old label with a traceable collection history, or a scientifically examined specimen with secure chain of custody could materially change the conclusion. The appropriate research position is therefore neither permanent rejection nor uncritical acceptance. It is a documented current boundary.
A strong future dossier would begin with object identity rather than with authentication. It would record dimensions, weight, photographs from all sides, material examination, repository history, previous labels, acquisition documents, sampling events, and every transfer. Only after that identity chain is established would it be useful to compare the object with Kamari publications. This order protects both scholarship and sacred-material stewardship.
Appendix Q — Collection Dispersal, Museum Identity, and Custody Dossier
The Kamari objects were dispersed after nineteenth-century excavation. This dossier reconstructs the known pathways and defines the missing links required before a modern specimen can be connected to the ancient chamber.
F.1 Dispersal after excavation
Honigberger’s discoveries entered a nineteenth-century world of antiquarian collecting in which objects could be sold, gifted, studied, or dispersed among several European collections. His later memoir records the sale of coins and the movement of material through dealers and collectors. This history means that “the Kamari collection” should not be imagined as one intact group preserved in a single museum from 1833 to the present.
Errington’s reconstruction is valuable because it tries to reconnect dispersed objects and documentary references. Some objects can be followed more confidently than others. A Wima Kadphises gold coin is reported in a traceable sale path, while the modern location of other deposit elements is less secure. The custody chapter therefore uses object-level statements rather than a single blanket claim of continuous institutional custody.
F.2 Museum catalogue evidence and the danger of same-region substitution
Gandhāran reliquaries in the British Museum and other collections are useful comparators, but they cannot be assigned to Kamari merely because they look similar or come from Afghanistan. This is particularly important for famous silver and gold reliquaries whose accession records belong to Bimaran or other stupas. A visually similar cylindrical silver vessel is not the Kamari vessel unless the catalogue and collection history establish the identity.
The project therefore treats museum catalogue searches as an identity test. Each potential object must match findspot, excavator, description, measurements where available, acquisition history, and original publication. A mismatch at any level is recorded rather than silently harmonized. This method prevents the attractive but dangerous practice of illustrating an unlocated Kamari object with a photograph of a different Gandhāran reliquary.
F.3 Present Hswagata custody and provenance gap
The user-supplied narrative describes Hswagata preservation of a broken tooth relic and a public display at MCU in 2023. For the purposes of this monograph, that statement documents a modern institutional claim. It does not, by itself, connect the object backward to Honigberger’s chamber. The missing bridge includes acquisition or transfer documentation, prior holder history, object identifiers, photographs across time, and any label or archive that explicitly names Kamari.
The distinction between custody and archaeological provenance is especially important here. Hswagata may physically safeguard an object without that custody proving where the object was excavated. Conversely, an excavated Kamari object could have a documented findspot even if its current location is unknown. The two chains should eventually meet if the modern object is truly one of Honigberger’s finds; until they do, they remain separate records.
F.4 Legal and ethical neutrality
This research does not determine ownership, export legality, title, or sovereign entitlement. Nineteenth-century removal and collecting occurred under historical political conditions that require specific legal research if a title question is raised. The present monograph records known movements and gaps without converting them into a judicial conclusion.
The same restraint protects future dialogue. If an institution, community, museum, or state later raises a claim or offers documentation, the evidence can be incorporated without having to undo an earlier assertion of legal certainty. Academic provenance research is strongest when it records what happened and what remains unknown before asking what legal consequence may follow.
Appendix S — Kabul Valley Comparative Archaeology Dossier
Regional comparison clarifies the setting of Kamari while the project-isolation rule prevents nearby or visually similar monuments from becoming surrogate evidence.
H.1 Kamari within the Kabul Buddhist landscape
Kamari was not an isolated Buddhist monument. The Kabul valley and adjoining routes contained numerous stupas and monasteries reflecting long periods of Buddhist patronage, travel, and ritual activity. Regional comparison helps explain architectural forms and chronological possibilities, but it cannot substitute for the Kamari deposit itself. The method used here therefore treats nearby sites as comparators rather than evidence that a specific Kamari object must have shared their history.
The landscape perspective is important for understanding why valuable relic deposits mattered. Stupas were nodes in religious movement, commemoration, patronage, and local identity. A central deposit could establish or renew the sacred status of a monument while later enlargement allowed that significance to remain physically embedded within a new architectural phase. Kamari’s inner-core arrangement is intelligible within this broader Buddhist practice without requiring a unique doctrinal explanation.
H.2 Shewaki as a conservation and architectural comparator
Shewaki provides a useful modern conservation comparator because it demonstrates the vulnerability of Kabul-area Buddhist masonry and the need to separate original fabric from later repair. Conservation reports can document materials, deterioration, and interventions with a precision unavailable to nineteenth-century excavators. Such evidence cannot be retroactively transferred to Kamari, but it helps define what a future physical survey of Kamari should record.
Regional comparison also supports the cautious use of maps. Coordinates from heritage surveys can orient readers, yet security, site preservation, and differing survey standards require restraint. The monograph therefore avoids false precision and does not publish restricted storage or sacred-object locations.
H.3 Guldara and chronological comparison
Guldara has long figured in discussions of Kushan-period Buddhist architecture in the Kabul region. Comparison can help frame masonry, stupa form, and patronage, but similarity does not make two monuments contemporaneous. Each monument has its own evidence. The Kamari foundation coin is therefore more direct for its central deposit than a stylistic resemblance to another stupa.
This rule is particularly important where scholarship seeks to build regional sequences from architecture. Comparative dating is valuable when several monuments share securely dated features, but circular reasoning must be avoided: Kamari should not be dated by Guldara if Guldara’s date is itself partly inferred from Kamari-like architecture. The chronology chapter therefore distinguishes direct, comparative, and traditional dating evidence.
H.4 Bimaran and the problem of seductive visual analogies
Bimaran reliquaries are famous and visually well documented, which makes them tempting illustrations for any Gandhāran relic study. That temptation is precisely why identity control matters. A Bimaran silver or gold reliquary can illustrate a regional type only when it is clearly labelled comparative; it cannot stand in for the unlocated Kamari vessel.
Visual substitution can create a false memory stronger than prose. Once a reader sees a famous museum object under a Kamari heading, later caveats may not undo the association. For this reason the present publication prefers original analytical diagrams to unrelated photographs when an authentic Kamari object image cannot be lawfully and confidently identified.
Appendix T — Visual Evidence, Rights, and Reconstruction Dossier
The visual programme is governed by evidential status. Historical images are used only when identity and rights permit; otherwise the publication relies on labelled analytical reconstruction.
I.1 Historical plates as evidence
Historical plates are not decorative illustrations. A plate can preserve the form of an object that is now lost, show how nineteenth-century scholars grouped finds, and reveal labels or numbering important to object identity. For the Kamari project, the visual research priority is therefore to locate the original Jacquet plates and later reproductions with their captions intact, not merely to collect attractive images of Gandhāran relics.
A plate reproduced without its caption can be dangerous because the reader loses the source’s own identification and numbering. Cropping can also remove scale, adjacent objects, or publication context. The visual register consequently records the publication, plate number, object number, caption, access status, and reproduction rights separately.
I.2 Why Figure 59 must not be silently extended
The later institutional description “Fig. 59.8” is now treated as an attempt to identify the additional unnumbered object visibly present in the Figure 59 assemblage, rather than as an invented eighth object. The central contradiction is narrower: why the object is visible while its numeral or explicit tooth label is absent from the inspected reproduction, and what earlier caption, archive, or interpretive source supports assigning it the number 59.8.
Further verification should seek the earliest edition, plate, supplement, archive, caption, or catalogue that explicitly identifies the unnumbered Figure 59 object as a tooth and, if possible, as item 59.8. The publication must reproduce the visible numbering exactly as inspected while also recording the unnumbered object. This case demonstrates why visual metadata and the objects actually visible in a plate can be as evidentially important as prose.
I.3 Analytical reconstructions
The diagrams prepared for this monograph are explicitly analytical reconstructions. They simplify the monument and deposit relationships so readers can understand the evidence chain. They do not claim to reproduce the ancient appearance, exact masonry courses, original colours, or excavation scene. Each caption states the reconstruction basis and its limits.
Analytical diagrams are especially appropriate where reproduction rights are uncertain. They allow the argument to be visual without appropriating a photograph or pretending that a generated scene is historical evidence. This publication therefore distinguishes “source image,” “analytical reconstruction,” and “illustrative concept” as three different visual statuses.
I.4 Image-generation briefs and non-evidentiary status
The image-generation prompts supplied in Appendix J are design briefs, not evidentiary assets. Any image created from them must carry a visible label such as “Illustrative reconstruction; not an excavation photograph.” It must not reproduce a specific unlicensed museum object or imply that a synthetic human figure is Honigberger, Jacquet, Masson, or another historical person unless the image is intentionally generic.
For scholarly publication, the safest generated visuals are explanatory cross-sections, neutral landscape reconstructions, and process diagrams. Photorealistic depictions of the tooth, chamber contents, or scientific test results would risk being mistaken for evidence and are therefore excluded from the evidentiary visual programme.
Appendix V — Extended Claim-Evidence Register
The repeated review-layer rows above are not presented as independent evidence. They model the same claim at separate review checkpoints—archaeological description, public wording, and certificate boundary—so that a later change can be traced without silently changing the original claim. Re-examination now confirms that the reproduced Figure 59 plate contains an additional unnumbered object. The project-supplied Custodians of the Buddha’s Sacred Relics, Vol. 1, pp. 217–219 identifies that object as the broken front-tooth relic. The prior narrative described an exhibition associated with the 136th anniversary of Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University on 13 September 2023 and stated that information concerning DNA and Carbon-14 had been sent to MCU. The official event date can be independently checked, but the specific scientific reports and object-level exhibition documentation remain outstanding verification targets.
Z.5 Earlier candidate metadata
Earlier metadata described the site as a second-century Kushan stupa near Kabul, named Sir John Marshall (1913) as excavator, identified the relic as a broken front tooth of the Buddha, and placed the object in Kabul Museum/storage. The present project corrects the excavator to Honigberger in 1833 for the deposit under study. Z.6 Preservation of devotional meaning
The earlier narrative interpreted the tooth as a tangible symbol of impermanence and spiritual continuity. The current monograph does not adjudicate the devotional truth of that interpretation. It records the religious meaning as a modern tradition while separating it from archaeological, anatomical, and custody claims.
Z.7 Institutional ethics language
The earlier research framework emphasized non-destructive handling, archival integrity, cultural sensitivity, truth, harmlessness, religious humility, and a right to amend the record if new evidence emerges. Those principles are compatible with the present correction process: revising a historical claim in response to stronger source inspection is an application of the stated ethics rather than a rejection of the institution’s devotional purpose.
Z.8 Certificate-use boundary
The earlier certificate language stated that research correlation should not be treated as absolute biological proof, state authentication, legal ownership, exclusive custodianship, or commercial certification. The present monograph strengthens that boundary by requiring an archaeological object chain and competent biological identification before any tooth-specific archaeological conclusion is used in a future certificate.

This appendix expands the shorter image brief into production-ready instructions. These prompts are intended only for non-evidentiary reconstructions where a lawful verified source image cannot be reproduced. Founder & Custodian
Bhikkhu S. Dhammasami Indasoma Siridantamahāpālaka (Sao Dhammasami) serves as Founder and Custodian of The Hswagata Buddha Tooth Relics Preservation Private Museum and directs the institution’s work in heritage stewardship, research, documentation, and publication. He is a Buddhist monk and author and holds an M.A. (Pali) and a Ph.D. (Thesis) in Peace Studies from the International Buddhist Studies College, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, as stated in the institution-supplied profile. His work includes Buddhist archaeology and the historical tracking of tooth-relic traditions through stūpa research, travel accounts, archival materials, and museum records.

Institutional Status and Governance
The Hswagata Buddha Tooth Relics Preservation Private Museum operates as an independent private religious-heritage and research institution dedicated to preservation, documentation, academic study, archival management, and ethical stewardship. It is not represented by this appendix as a governmental body, court, university department, UNESCO body, intergovernmental organization, or independent external authentication laboratory.
The institution functions in association with the Office of Siridantamahāpālaka, the Hswagata International Relic Registry (HIRR), and the Integrated Relic Custodianship Model (IRCM). These entities and frameworks have different functions: a registry record is not a museum accession, a research publication is not a title deed, and a custodianship framework is not a legal adjudication.

Statement on the Purpose, Neutrality, and Use of Research Findings
Research papers, records, analyses, assessments, and findings issued within the HSWAGATA–HIRR framework are undertaken for academic, documentary, archival, museum, and cultural-heritage research purposes. They may examine historical, archaeological, literary, epigraphic, museum, custodial, and tradition-associated evidence relating to Buddhist relics and associated materials.
Such research does not determine or establish the ownership, sovereignty, legal title, inheritance rights, or other legally enforceable rights of any country, government, religious institution, museum, private institution, family, individual, or other entity. Present-day territorial location, historical sovereignty, ownership at the time of discovery, possession, institutional custody, subsequent transfer, and present physical location are treated as separate matters.
A research publication, registry entry, assessment, or institutional certificate must not be construed as a judicial finding, governmental determination, ownership document, title document, export permit, commercial authentication, or other legally binding instrument unless a competent authority has separately issued such a determination.
Downstream users who cite, reproduce, summarize, translate, interpret, or incorporate HSWAGATA–HIRR research into another work remain responsible for verifying the primary sources, official records, applicable laws, court records, governmental documents, and competent institutional decisions relevant to their own use. A later user’s legal or administrative argument does not automatically become the position of the original researcher or institution.
The role of the researcher is to collect and evaluate evidence, identify sources, examine historical and archaeological information, preserve uncertainty, and present reasoned scholarly assessments. Appropriate terms may include “historical evidence,” “archaeological evidence,” “documentary evidence,” “tradition-associated evidence,” “contextual correspondence,” and “probabilistic historical assessment.”

The Integrated Relic Custodianship Model (IRCM) is the institution’s framework for coordinating research, documentation, preservation, governance, and respectful care. It was developed in response to recurring problems in relic research, including fragmented documentation, uncertain provenance, interrupted custody histories, inconsistent archival practice, conflicting interpretations, and the need for clearer preservation standards.
Rather than treating ownership or authenticity as the only questions, the model gives priority to evidence, documentation, preservation, transparency, accountability, continuity, and respect for sacred heritage.

Scholarly Review Framework
Review status is project-specific. This general appendix does not state that any particular publication has completed external peer review, scientific review, archaeological review, or independent institutional review. Each publication should report only the review that actually occurred.
Internal research review may examine source use, argument, citations, consistency, and compliance with institutional research standards.
Specialist review may be sought for archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics, conservation, languages, scientific evidence, museum records, or other fields where competent expertise is required.
External scholarly review may be invited where appropriate, but invitation is not the same as completed peer review or endorsement.

Doctrinal and Devotional Traditions
Within Theravāda Buddhist traditions, sacred relics (Dhātu) carry profound devotional and religious significance. Texts, chronicles, commentaries, ritual practices, oral traditions, and living communities preserve accounts of relic veneration, sacred presence, meritorious worship, protective beings, and extraordinary events associated with relics.
The institution records such material as Buddhist religious and intangible heritage. Historical or archaeological research may study the origin, transmission, context, and reception of these traditions, but it does not automatically confirm or reject supernatural claims through empirical method.
This distinction allows devotional traditions to be represented respectfully while protecting scholarly clarity: a traditional account remains a traditional account unless an independent evidence class supports a different type of conclusion.
Religious Heritage and Devotional Tradition Statement
Theravāda Buddhist literature and later relic traditions include accounts of extraordinary qualities associated with sacred relics, including manifestation, multiplication, transformation, disappearance, relocation, and other events understood devotionally as Dhātu-pāṭihāriya. The institution preserves and documents these traditions as part of Buddhist religious heritage. They are not presented by this appendix as archaeological, scientific, legal, or governmental determinations.
Spiritual Custodianship
Within devotional traditions, custodianship may carry a spiritual meaning grounded in Saddhā (faith), Pūjā (veneration), Puñña (merit), discipline, and ethical responsibility. This spiritual understanding is distinct from physical custody, museum registration, legal possession, or legal title.
Traditional Accounts of Protective Beings
Theravāda and wider Buddhist traditions preserve accounts of devas, nāgas, and guardian beings associated with the protection of relics, stupas, monasteries, and places of worship. These accounts are documented as religious heritage and are neither verified nor rejected as empirical findings by this institutional appendix.
Interpretive Boundary for Devotional Statements
Devotional and doctrinal statements in this appendix are expressions of Buddhist religious heritage. They do not override applicable law, establish ownership or title, repair a provenance gap, identify biological material, prove archaeological context, or replace scientific evidence. Conversely, the absence of scientific verification does not erase the historical or religious significance of a documented devotional tradition.
